Abstract

The use of biofertilizers represents a sustainable and cost-effective strategy to enhance the growth and productivity of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). This study aimed to evaluate the effects of an artisanal biofertilizer on germination, growth, and yield of common bean. Two independent experiments were conducted. In the first experiment, bean seeds were subjected to four soaking durations (30, 60, 90, and 120 min) in an artisanal biofertilizer solution and compared with a non-soaked control. Germination percentage, root length, and plumule length were assessed eight days after sowing. In the second experiment, three application rates of the artisanal biofertilizer (5, 10, and 15 L ha⁻¹), a commercial biofertilizer, and an untreated control were evaluated. Measured variables included root dry mass, total plant dry mass, leaf area, grain dry mass, and harvest index. Biofertilizer treatments significantly affected plant development (p < 0,05). Seed soaking did not enhance germination or early seedling growth, as the control treatment showed the highest mean values for radicle and plumule development. Conversely, direct application of the artisanal biofertilizer at 15 L ha⁻¹ and the commercial biofertilizer resulted in superior plant growth, biomass accumulation, and harvest index. These findings indicate that while seed soaking in biofertilizer solutions is not an effective practice for improving early establishment, soil application of biofertilizers, particularly at higher doses, can significantly improve growth and yield performance in common bean.
