Abstract

The global energy crisis has encouraged the exploration of alternative sustainable energy sources. The present study explores the generation of electricity through the use of microbial fuel cells (MCCs) using the plant Sagittaria latifolia. The behavior of this species in different substrates was analyzed in order to determine its efficiency in the production of bioelectricity. Measurements of pH, electrical conductivity, bulk and real density, as well as organic matter content and soil texture were made. In addition, the growth of Sagittaria latifolia was recorded in each substrate for 29 weeks. Electricity production was measured over an experimental period of 60 days, taking readings of voltage, current intensity, electrical resistance and power at different times of the day. The results indicated that vermicompost presented the highest performance in the generation of bioelectricity, reaching a maximum voltage of 0.75 V and a power density of 0.81 W/m². In contrast, the soil of Macuspana showed the lowest values of electricity generation. Likewise, vermicompost favored the greater growth of Sagittaria latifolia, with an average height of 26.4 cm, compared to 24.8 cm in fruit compost and 20.7 cm in Macuspana soil. The potential of Sagittaria latifolia and substrates rich in organic matter as viable bioelectrochemical systems for the production of renewable energy is highlighted. It is suggested to carry out more studies to optimize the efficiency of the CCMs and evaluate the integration of electroactive microorganisms to optimize the system.
